For one AeroPress, use 15 to 17 g of coffee, which is 3 to 3.5 level tablespoons or about 1.5 to 1.7 scoops, with 240 g (8 oz) of water. That is a ratio of 1:14 to 1:16. Use 1:16 when you want a lighter, tea-like cup, and go toward 1:12 when you want it stronger and closer to a concentrate. The chart below has the amounts for 200 g and 240 g of water.
What is the AeroPress ratio chart?
This chart uses 5 g per level tablespoon and 10 g per scoop (2 tablespoons). Water is by weight, and 1 g is about 1 ml.
| Water | Ratio | Coffee (grams) | Level tablespoons | Scoops |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 200 g (6.8 oz) | 1:12 | 16.7 g | 3.3 | 1.7 |
| 200 g (6.8 oz) | 1:14 | 14.3 g | 2.9 | 1.4 |
| 200 g (6.8 oz) | 1:16 | 12.5 g | 2.5 | 1.25 |
| 240 g (8.5 oz) | 1:12 | 20 g | 4 | 2 |
| 240 g (8.5 oz) | 1:14 | 17.1 g | 3.4 | 1.7 |
| 240 g (8.5 oz) | 1:16 | 15 g | 3 | 1.5 |
The default in most of our posts is 1:16, and the how much coffee per cup page explains why. The AeroPress is a method where a stronger ratio than 1:16 is common, because the brew time is short. If you want to compare against other methods, coffee ratio by brewing method puts them in one chart.
Is the ratio different for standard and inverted?
No. The ratio is the same, and so is the dose. What changes is when the water meets the coffee. In the standard method, you put the AeroPress on the mug and the coffee starts to drip as soon as you pour. In the inverted method, you flip it so the plunger is at the bottom, which holds the water in until you press. Inverted gives you a more even steep, but you have to flip it carefully with hot liquid in it.
If you are new, use the standard method. It is easier and less likely to spill. Switch to inverted if you want more control over steep time.
How do you brew it?
- Weigh 15 g of coffee and grind it medium-fine, a little finer than for drip.
- Rinse the paper filter with hot water, then add the coffee.
- Pour 240 g of water, around 200°F (93°C), and stir for 10 seconds.
- Steep for about 1 to 2 minutes.
- Press slowly for about 30 seconds and stop at the hiss.
That is a starting point, not a rule. If the cup is sour, grind finer or steep longer. If it is bitter, grind coarser or steep for less time. You can add hot water after pressing if you want it closer to a regular cup. We covered the same logic for another method in pour-over coffee too sour.
AeroPress or French press: which should you use?
The AeroPress makes a cleaner cup in less time and is easier to clean, while a French press makes more at once and has more body. We compare them in French press vs AeroPress.
How many AeroPress brews are in a 12 oz bag?
A 12 oz bag is about 340 g. At 15 g per brew that is about 22 brews, and at 17 g it is about 20. A subscription keeps the bag coming, at 11% off with skip or cancel in one click.
Which coffee fits an AeroPress?
We pair it with No. 9 Optimism. The label calls it a pour-over or AeroPress coffee, bright and tea-like, with pear, floral, jasmine and strawberry. It is medium-light and from Mbeya, Tanzania. The label says to drink it while it is hot, because it flattens faster than the others. The No. 9 Optimism brewing guide has three ways to make it, and Tanzania coffee regions explains where it comes from.
