How much coffee for 64 oz of water? 24 tbsp (118 g)

A glass carafe of fresh drip coffee in a kitchen

For 64 oz (half a gallon, about 1,893 g) of water, use about 118 g of coffee. That is 24 level tablespoons (5 g each) or 12 scoops (2 tablespoons each), at a 1:16 ratio. For a stronger pot, 126 g at 1:15 is 25 tablespoons or 12.5 scoops. For a lighter pot, 111 g at 1:17 is 22 tablespoons or 11 scoops. The table below puts all three side by side. The reasoning behind 1:16 is on our pillar page, how much coffee per cup.

Which pots and brewers hold 64 oz?

Half a gallon is a lot of coffee. These are the usual containers, with capacities given as commonly sold sizes, so check the numbers on your own equipment.

  • A 12 cup drip maker. The cup on these is usually 5 oz, so 12 cups is about 60 oz. Filling it a little past that line gets you close to 64 oz, but most machines are best run at the line. Use our 12 cup page for the exact number.
  • A 14 cup drip maker. About 70 oz at 5 oz per cup. For 64 oz you would fill it partway, which is fine. See how much coffee for a 14 cup maker.
  • A 10 cup drip maker. About 50 oz, so it will not hold 64. See the 10 cup page.
  • A large French press. Common sizes top out around 34 to 51 oz, so 64 oz means two batches. The 32 oz French press page has the amounts for one.
  • An urn or a thermal dispenser. Many hold a gallon or more, and 64 oz is a half batch for them.

How do you brew 64 oz without it tasting weak?

Big batches go wrong in two places. The first is the grind, and the second is the machine. A pot this size takes longer to brew, so use a medium grind, and not a fine one, or it can over-extract and taste bitter. The second is that many machines under-fill the filter basket when you load it with 118 g, so check that the water reaches all the grounds and does not run down the side. If the pot tastes thin, go to 1:15 before you change anything else. Our pour-over coffee too weak post lists the order of fixes, and most of them apply to a drip machine as well.

How many pots is a 12 oz bag?

A 12 oz bag is about 340 g. At 118 g per pot it makes just under three 64 oz pots, about 2.9. If you serve a crowd regularly, plan on a bag for every three pots, and two bags for a long morning. Does it change for a different cup size?

The ratio does not. A cup is not a standard unit, and a pot labeled with cups is usually 5 or 6 oz per cup. The whole 64 oz is 10.7 cups at 6 oz, or 12.8 cups at 5 oz. If you are measuring by the cup instead, our pages for 8 cup and 6 cup makers do the work for you.
