Iced cinnamon roll coffee: No. 5 Canela flash brew

A tall glass of iced coffee beside a pour-over dripper

Use 24 g of No. 5 Canela (about 5 level tablespoons, or 2.5 standard scoops), 220 g of hot water just off the boil, and 150 g of ice in the glass or server. Brew it hot onto the ice, stir, and pour over fresh ice. It takes about five minutes and gives you one tall glass. That is flash brewing, and it is the quickest way to get an iced coffee that keeps the aroma of a hot one, which matters a lot for a coffee whose whole idea is cinnamon roll.

What does No. 5 Canela taste like?

It is our one flavored coffee. The label says medium roast, cinnamon roll as the note, and the ingredients are coffee and natural flavorings. The roaster does not give an origin or process for it, so we do not either. For a cup-by-cup description, see what No. 5 Canela tastes like. This page is only about serving it cold.

Why flash brew and not cold brew?

Hot water pulls aroma out of coffee quickly, and pouring it over ice cools it in seconds so less of that aroma escapes. Cold brew takes many hours and produces a smoother, flatter cup. For a flavored coffee that people choose for its smell, flash brew is the better fit. If you are not sure of the difference, cold brew vs iced coffee compares the two.

What is the recipe?

This is the method, with the ice and the water counted together so the finished drink is about the same strength as a normal hot cup. If you want the same idea with a different coffee, we wrote it up for iced No. 8 Consent.

Glass size Coffee Hot water Ice in the server
1 glass, about 10 oz 24 g (5 tbsp, 2.5 scoops) 220 g (7.8 oz) 150 g
2 glasses, about 20 oz 48 g (10 tbsp, 5 scoops) 440 g (15.5 oz) 300 g
Stronger, 1 glass 28 g (5.5 tbsp, 2.8 scoops) 220 g (7.8 oz) 150 g
  1. Put the ice in the server or a large glass. Weigh it if you have a scale.
  2. Rinse a paper filter in your dripper and set it over the server.
  3. Grind 24 g a little coarser than usual, as the label suggests for drip. Add it to the filter.
  4. Pour 50 g of water just off the boil, wait 30 seconds, then pour the rest in slow circles. Aim to finish in about three minutes.
  5. Swirl until the ice has melted down, then pour over fresh ice.

A drip machine works too. Fill the reservoir with only 220 g of water, put ice in the carafe, and use the same coffee dose. Note that in a machine you cannot control the pour, so the result varies more.

How do you fix it if the glass tastes off?

  • Too weak: use 28 g instead of 24 g, or grind a little finer. Melted ice is the usual cause, so cut the ice to 120 g.
  • Too sharp or bitter: grind slightly coarser. The same fixes as hot coffee apply, and pour-over coffee too bitter lists them in order.
  • Too sweet for you: add no sugar at all, and try it with a little unsweetened milk first. The cinnamon roll note comes from the flavoring, not from sugar in the bag, since the only ingredients are coffee and natural flavorings.

Does it still work in a moka pot?

The label lists drip or a moka pot, and a moka pot gives a concentrate you can pour over ice. We have a table of amounts for it in how much coffee for a 6 cup moka pot. Pour the moka coffee over a full glass of ice and top with cold milk. We do not have a tested ratio for this exact combination, so adjust to taste.

How do you make a cup that tastes like a cinnamon roll?

Add milk. The label says it is good with milk, and milk rounds out the flavoring in a way that reminds people of a pastry. Start with two tablespoons and add more if you want it creamier. For the full range of ratios by brew method, see coffee ratio by brewing method: one chart.

Questions people ask

How do you make iced cinnamon roll coffee?

Brew hot coffee over ice. Use 24 g of No. 5 Canela, 220 g of hot water just off the boil, and 150 g of ice in the glass or server. Stir, then add more ice. It takes about five minutes.

Does flavored coffee work as iced coffee?

It can. No. 5 Canela is medium roast with natural flavorings and a cinnamon roll note on the label. Chilling quiets sweetness a little, so brew a bit strong and taste before adding anything.

Should you add milk to iced Canela?

Our label says it is good with milk and better than it sounds black. Milk plays up the cinnamon roll idea. Start with a splash and add more to taste.
