How much coffee for a 20 oz tumbler?

A steel tumbler and a pour-over on a kitchen counter

For a 20 oz tumbler of hot coffee, use about 37 g of coffee, which is 7.5 level tablespoons or 3.5 scoops, with 20 fl oz (591 g) of water. That is a 1:16 ratio. For an iced coffee in the same tumbler, use the same 37 g and split the water: about 10 oz (296 g) hot and 10 oz (296 g) ice. Tablespoons are level and 5 g each, scoops are 2 tablespoons. For the reasoning behind these units, see how much coffee per cup.

How much coffee for 16, 20, 24 and 30 oz tumblers?

Tumblers are commonly sold in 16, 20, 24 and 30 oz sizes, though the real capacity varies by brand, so check yours. Use the amount of drink you actually want and not the number on the cup. The table gives the coffee at 1:16 for each size, the hot water, and how to split the water when you make it over ice.

Tumbler Coffee (1:16) Hot, all water Over ice, hot water Over ice, ice
16 oz 30 g, 6 tbsp, 3 scoops 473 g 237 g 237 g
20 oz 37 g, 7.5 tbsp, 3.5 scoops 591 g 296 g 296 g
24 oz 44 g, 9 tbsp, 4.5 scoops 710 g 355 g 355 g
30 oz 55 g, 11 tbsp, 5.5 scoops 887 g 444 g 444 g

The chart shows the grams of coffee by size. Note that the coffee does not change between hot and iced, only the water does. In the iced version, the coffee is brewed at double strength (1:8 on the hot water) and the melting ice brings the drink back to 1:16.

How do you make it hot?

  1. Preheat the tumbler with hot water, so the coffee stays hot longer. Pour it out.
  2. Weigh 37 g of medium ground coffee into your brewer.
  3. Brew 591 g of water, just off the boil, through a drip machine or a pour-over cone. A pour-over takes about three to four minutes.
  4. Pour into the tumbler, close the lid, and drink.

A tumbler holds heat well, but coffee left in a closed tumbler for hours can taste flat or bitter. Make what you will drink.

How do you make it over ice?

  1. Fill the carafe or the tumbler with 296 g of ice.
  2. Brew 296 g of hot water through 37 g of coffee, directly onto the ice.
  3. Swirl, then pour into the tumbler. Add more ice for a very cold drink, but expect it to get a little weaker as it melts.

What if you do not have a scale?

Use the level tablespoons and scoops in the table. A level tablespoon of ground coffee varies a little, and that is explained in how many grams of coffee in a tablespoon. For scoops, see how many tablespoons in a coffee scoop. For a bigger batch, how much coffee for 64 oz works on the same ratio, and coffee ratio by brewing method covers other brewers.
