What coffee goes with a cinnamon roll?

Cinnamon roll on a plate beside a steaming cup of coffee

For a cinnamon roll, brew a coffee with enough acidity or bitter edge to cut the sugar, or one that matches the spice. From our shelf, that means No. 7 Praxis for contrast (dark chocolate, bright fruit, butterscotch), No. 5 Canela if you want the cup to taste like the roll, and No. 3 Position if your coffee has milk in it. Brew it a little stronger than usual, around 1:15.

What makes a cinnamon roll hard to pair?

A roll is sweet, buttery and spiced all at once, usually with frosting on top. A soft, sweet coffee next to it tastes flat, because your tongue is already full of sugar. Three things help a cup stand up to that:

  • Acidity. Bright fruit or citrus notes cut through butter and icing the way a squeeze of lemon cuts a rich dish.
  • A bitter or chocolate edge. Dark chocolate notes give the sweetness something to push against.
  • Body. A coffee with weight does not get washed out by a mouthful of dough.

This is pairing logic, not a rule. If you like a sweet coffee with a sweet roll, drink that.

Which of our coffees go with a cinnamon roll?

Coffee Label notes Why it works Best brewed
No. 7 Praxis Dark chocolate, bright fruit, butterscotch Contrast: fruit acidity against the frosting, chocolate against the spice Any method, drip is easiest
No. 5 Canela Cinnamon roll Match: the cup already tastes of cinnamon, so the roll and the coffee echo each other Drip or moka pot, a little coarser than usual
No. 3 Position Dark chocolate, dried fruit, earthy Weight: stays distinct under milk next to a rich bake Espresso 1:2 in 28 seconds, or moka pot

Canela is a flavored coffee. Its label lists coffee and natural flavorings as ingredients, and the roaster gives its roast as medium. It suits cold mornings and the end of a meal, and the label says it is better than it sounds black. If a flavored coffee is not your thing, Praxis is the plain choice.

How should I brew it?

Use 1:15 to 1:16 for a drip pot, which is about 18 to 19 g of coffee for a 10 fl oz mug, or 3.5 level tablespoons. The chart for other sizes is on our how much coffee per cup page. Praxis is the coffee our roaster suggests brewing twice, once at 60 g per litre and once at 70, then keeping whichever you preferred. With a sweet roll, try 70 first.

For milk drinks, the roaster suggests Position for espresso, moka and anything with milk. If you do not have an espresso machine, our post on how much coffee for a moka pot gives the dose, and the latte ratio gives the milk.

What about coffee with a frosted roll versus a plain one?

Temperature matters too. A warm roll with a hot cup is where the pairing feels best, and a roll that has cooled and set tastes less sweet, so a plain cup of Praxis can be enough.

Frosted rolls are sweeter, so lean toward Praxis, where the fruit acidity does more work. A plain or lightly glazed roll leaves more room for Canela, since there is less sugar to fight. These are our preferences, not tested results, so try both and keep the combination you like. If you want a fuller list of chocolate-leaning options, the post linked below sorts them.

Questions people ask

What kind of coffee goes best with cinnamon rolls?

One with acidity or a chocolate edge to cut the sugar, such as Praxis, or a cup that echoes the spice, such as Canela. Brew it slightly strong.

Should I drink cinnamon rolls with black coffee or with milk?

Either works. Black coffee cuts the sweetness more, and milk softens it. If you add milk, Position holds its shape better than a soft, delicate coffee.

Is cinnamon flavored coffee a good match for a cinnamon roll?

It is a match rather than a contrast. Canela is flavored, with natural flavorings on the label, and it tastes of cinnamon roll, so the roll and cup echo each other.
