A 12 oz bag of coffee is 340 g, which is 68 level tablespoons (5 g each) or 34 scoops (2 tablespoons, about 10 g each). At 1:16 that makes about 34 coffee maker cups at one scoop per cup, 22 eight ounce mugs, or 15 twelve ounce mugs. The right number for you depends on the size of your mug, so the tables below split it by mug and by machine pot.
How many mugs does a bag make?
These figures use 1:16 coffee to water by weight, the default on our how much coffee per cup page. A fluid ounce of water weighs about 29.6 g.
| Mug size | Coffee per mug | Level tablespoons | Scoops | Mugs per 340 g bag |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6 fl oz | 11 g | 2.2 | 1.1 | about 31 |
| 8 fl oz | 15 g | 3 | 1.5 | about 22 |
| 10 fl oz | 18 g | 3.6 | 1.8 | about 18 |
| 12 fl oz | 22 g | 4.4 | 2.2 | about 15 |
| 16 fl oz | 30 g | 6 | 3 | about 11 |
| 20 fl oz | 37 g | 7.4 | 3.7 | about 9 |
If you measure by the single cup, how much coffee for 8 oz of water goes into the exact steps.
Why does a coffee maker cup count differently?
A coffee maker cup is commonly 5 fl oz, not the 8 fl oz measuring cup. That is why a 12 cup pot holds about 60 fl oz, not 96. We explain the gap in how many ounces in a cup of coffee. Using one scoop (10 g) per coffee maker cup gives 34 cups from a bag. Measuring a strict 1:16 for 5 fl oz cups needs about 9 g, which stretches the bag to about 36.
| Machine size | Water | Coffee at 1:16 | Scoops | Pots per 340 g bag |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4 cup | about 20 fl oz | 37 g | 3.7 | about 9 |
| 8 cup | about 40 fl oz | 74 g | 7.4 | about 4.6 |
| 10 cup | about 50 fl oz | 93 g | 9.3 | about 3.7 |
| 12 cup | about 60 fl oz | 111 g | 11 | about 3.1 |
Machine sizes vary by maker, so treat the water figures as about right, not exact. The full pot-by-pot chart is on coffee to water ratio chart by ounces.
What if you like it stronger or weaker?
A small change in ratio moves the count by a few cups. Here is a 340 g bag at three strengths.
| Ratio | 8 fl oz mug | 12 fl oz mug |
|---|---|---|
| 1:15 (stronger) | 16 g, about 21 mugs | 24 g, about 14 mugs |
| 1:16 (default) | 15 g, about 22 mugs | 22 g, about 15 mugs |
| 1:17 (lighter) | 14 g, about 24 mugs | 21 g, about 16 mugs |
The roaster's recipes call for 60 g per litre, which is a little lighter than 1:16. At that dose a bag makes about 5.7 litres, or around 190 fl oz, of brewed coffee.
How long will the bag last?
That depends on how many mugs you drink a day, and we already worked it out. See how long a 12 oz bag of coffee lasts for the days at one to four mugs. For turning the numbers into spoons, how many grams of coffee in a tablespoon and how many tablespoons in a coffee scoop cover the rounding.
Which bag should you measure with?
Any of them, since every bag is 12 oz. If you want a bag that works in a drip machine without fuss, No. 1 Common Sense is the one the roaster suggests for drip or French press at 60 g per litre.

Do you need a scale?
Not to start. Level spoons get you close, and a scale gets you exact. If your counts come out different from the tables, check whether you are heaping the spoon, because a heaping tablespoon can hold well over 5 g.
