For 100 people at 8 oz each, use about 1,480 g of ground coffee (1.5 kg, or 3.3 pounds): 296 level tablespoons (5 g each), or 148 scoops (2 tablespoons each), at the standard 1:16 ratio. That is 4.4 twelve ounce bags (340 g each), so buy five. If your crowd likes it strong, plan on about 1.7 kg. The math behind every row below is in our how much coffee per cup guide.
How much coffee for 60, 80 and 100 drinkers?
Not everyone at an event drinks coffee, and some people take two cups. Guess how many of your 100 guests will actually pour one, use the row closest to that number, then round up. Each cup is 8 fl oz (237 g of water). Standard is 1:16, medium-strong is 1:15 and strong is 1:14.
| Cups | Water | Standard 1:16 | Medium-strong 1:15 | Strong 1:14 | 12 oz bags at 1:16 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 60 | 480 fl oz (3.8 gal) | 887 g, 177 tbsp, 89 scoops | 946 g, 189 tbsp, 95 scoops | 1,014 g, 203 tbsp, 101 scoops | 2.6 |
| 80 | 640 fl oz (5.0 gal) | 1,183 g, 237 tbsp, 118 scoops | 1,262 g, 252 tbsp, 126 scoops | 1,352 g, 270 tbsp, 135 scoops | 3.5 |
| 100 | 800 fl oz (6.2 gal) | 1,478 g, 296 tbsp, 148 scoops | 1,577 g, 315 tbsp, 158 scoops | 1,690 g, 338 tbsp, 169 scoops | 4.3 |
The bottom row is the full 100 cups: 800 fl oz, or 6.25 gallons of water. If you only have a headcount and no idea who drinks coffee, use the 80 row (about 1,185 g, 4 bags) and keep one more bag sealed in the cupboard. A bag you do not open is not wasted. What size urn do you need for 100 people?
Commonly sold party urns come in sizes such as 30, 55 and 100 cups, but the cup on the label is often smaller than 8 oz, around 5 or 6 oz. An urn rated for 100 cups may hold only about 500 to 600 fl oz, which is closer to 65 to 75 cups of a real 8 oz serving. Check the water line in ounces or liters on your urn, not the cup number, and divide the grams by the actual capacity.
- One 100 cup urn: likely enough for 70 or so full cups. Plan a second batch or a second urn.
- Two 55 cup urns: easier to run in turns, and one can brew while the other serves.
- Drip machines in a row: a 64 oz machine takes about 118 g (see how much coffee for 64 oz of water), so 100 cups needs about a dozen runs.
When should you brew, and how often?
Plan three waves, not one. Most people take coffee at the start and again after a meal, so a first batch of about 40 cups, a second of 40 and a third of 20 follows the room better than 100 cups at once. Coffee held for hours on heat tastes flat and bitter. Keep each batch measured in a labeled container, so a refill takes two minutes.
Start the first urn 45 minutes before guests arrive, because a big urn has to heat a lot of water. Rinse it with hot water first so it does not cool the brew. Medium grind for drip and urn brewing. A scale beats counting 296 spoons, but if you only have spoons, count out the first batch into a bowl and check it against the table.
How do you check the math before the event?
Run one test pot a day or two before. Brew a single batch with the grams from the table, taste it, and note whether you would add or take away a tablespoon per ten cups. A crowd is easy to please at 1:16, but your guests may prefer a stronger or milder pot, and it is far easier to change the plan on a Tuesday than in front of a line of people. Also count mugs, stir sticks and a place to pour out the dregs, because the coffee is only half of the job. Label each carafe so nobody mistakes decaf for regular, if you serve both.

Pick something nobody argues about. No. 6 Hegemony is the roaster's pick for the pot everyone in the house drinks without complaining. The label lists cocoa and smooth, with low acidity and heavy body, which makes it very hard to ruin in a big batch.
