How much coffee for a gallon of coffee?

A large coffee urn beside a stack of paper cups

For a gallon of coffee, use about 237 g of coffee, which is 47 level tablespoons or about 24 scoops, with 128 fl oz (3.79 liters) of water at 1:16. That is roughly 70 percent of a 12 oz bag. For a half gallon, halve it: about 118 g, 24 level tablespoons or 12 scoops.

What is the gallon table from weak to strong?

A level tablespoon of ground coffee is about 5 g and a standard scoop is 2 tablespoons (about 10 g). Water is 29.6 g per fl oz. Everything is rounded. These are the same ratios as our how much coffee per cup page, scaled up.

Water 1:15, stronger 1:16, default 1:17, lighter
64 fl oz (1,892 g) 126 g, 25 tbsp, 12.6 scoops 118 g, 24 tbsp, 11.8 scoops 111 g, 22 tbsp, 11.1 scoops
128 fl oz (3,785 g) 252 g, 50 tbsp, 25.2 scoops 237 g, 47 tbsp, 23.7 scoops 223 g, 45 tbsp, 22.3 scoops

Pick 1:16 unless you know your crowd. Water measured by the gallon jug is easy to over-pour, so fill the jug, then weigh or mark what actually goes in the pot. Go to 1:15 for coffee that has to stand up to cream and sugar, and to 1:17 if the pot will sit a while or the group likes it mild. Weigh the coffee if you can. At this size, a heaped tablespoon instead of a level one adds up to several extra tablespoons by the end.

How many gallons does a 12 oz bag make?

A 12 oz bag is about 340 g of coffee.

Ratio Coffee per gallon Gallons per 12 oz bag
1:15 252 g About 1.3
1:16 237 g About 1.4
1:17 223 g About 1.5

So one bag covers a gallon with about a third of it left over. For a gathering with a fixed head count, our how much coffee for 20 people page works from the number of guests instead of the volume.

How do you actually brew a gallon?

You rarely brew a gallon in a single batch at home. These are the three ways that work.

  1. Two half-gallon batches. Brew 64 fl oz twice in a drip machine, using the half-gallon row of the table. Our how much coffee for 64 oz of water page has the details for that size. Pour each batch into a thermos or carafe as it finishes, since coffee left on a hot plate tastes worse every few minutes. The thermos page covers the holding dose.
  2. An urn or a percolator. Equipment sizes vary, so check the marks on your own urn and weigh the coffee for the water you actually fill. For a percolator the grind and the dose differ, which we cover in how much coffee for a percolator.
  3. Cold brew. The roaster suggests cold brew at 1:8 overnight for No. 6 Hegemony. That makes a concentrate, not a ready-to-drink cup: 3,785 g of water at 1:8 needs about 473 g of coffee, which is more than a full 12 oz bag, so a gallon of concentrate is a bigger job than a gallon of hot coffee. For the cold method on its own, see our cold brew ratio page.

If you are comparing the sizes in between, the coffee to water ratio chart by ounces lists them in one place. We do not have a separate page for a gallon of any one brewer, so check your own equipment for how much water it holds.

Which coffee works for a crowd?

Our judgment, not a label fact: pick one that nobody argues about. The roaster calls No. 6 Hegemony the pot everyone in the house drinks without complaining. It lists cocoa and smooth as the notes, and says it has low acidity and heavy body, which makes it very hard to ruin. That matters when the coffee sits in an urn for an hour.
