How much coffee for a thermos?

A thermos and a steaming mug on a kitchen counter

For a 34 oz thermos, use about 64 g of coffee, which is 13 level tablespoons or 6.5 scoops, at 1:16. For a 16 oz thermos it is 30 g (6 tablespoons, 3 scoops), for 25 oz it is 47 g (9.5 tablespoons, 4.7 scoops) and for 40 oz it is 75 g (15 tablespoons, 7.5 scoops). Add about one tablespoon per 10 oz if the coffee will sit a few hours. The general rule for every brewer is on the how much coffee per cup page.

How much coffee for each thermos size?

A thermos does not brew anything. It holds coffee you made in a drip machine, a pour-over or a French press, so the dose depends on the water you brew, which is the size of the thermos you want to fill. These numbers use 1:16 (1 g of coffee to 16 g of water), 30 g of water per ounce, level tablespoons of 5 g and scoops of 2 tablespoons (10 g). Thermos sizes are as commonly sold, so check the one you own.

Thermos size Water Coffee at 1:16 Level tablespoons Scoops Stronger, 1:15
16 oz 480 g 30 g 6 3 32 g
25 oz 750 g 47 g 9.5 4.7 50 g
34 oz 1,020 g 64 g 13 6.4 68 g
40 oz 1,200 g 75 g 15 7.5 80 g

The numbers are rounded, so if a scoop in your kitchen is not exactly 10 g, weigh it once and use the weight. If you brew in a drip machine, the pot sizes are on the 12 cup and 8 cup coffee maker pages, and a 34 oz thermos is a little over half of a full 12 cup pot of about 60 oz.

Should you brew stronger if it will sit?

A little, yes. Coffee in a closed thermos loses heat slowly and keeps changing in the cup, and most people find a pot that sat for a few hours tastes thinner and flatter than a fresh one. Moving from 1:16 to 1:15 is the easy fix, and it is the last column in the table. That is about 2 to 3 g more for a 16 oz thermos and 5 g more for a 34 oz one. We do not have tested numbers on how long coffee stays good in a thermos, so treat the 1:15 column as a starting point and adjust to your own taste after one day of use.

Two things help more than a stronger dose. Pre-heat the thermos with hot tap water for a minute before you pour the coffee in, and fill it close to the top, because empty space inside the thermos is where the heat goes. If the coffee tastes bitter at the bottom of the thermos, the dose is not the problem. Use a slightly coarser grind next time. Our too bitter post goes through the fixes.

How many thermos fills does a 12 oz bag make?

A 12 oz bag is about 340 g of coffee. At 1:16 it fills a 16 oz thermos about 11 times, a 25 oz thermos about 7 times, a 34 oz thermos about 5 times and a 40 oz thermos about 4 and a half times. A daily 34 oz thermos finishes a bag in about five days. Our subscription is 11% off with skip or cancel in one click, which suits a coffee you use up this fast.

Which coffee holds up in a thermos?

A thermos is a place where a delicate, bright coffee can flatten, so we would pick a bag that is built to stay put. The roaster describes No. 3 Position as a coffee that holds its shape under milk and under ice, with label notes of dark chocolate, dried fruit and earthy. That is the sturdy end of our range, and it is why we would reach for it when the coffee is going to sit. The roaster does not declare a roast level for Position, so we do not state one.

What about other sizes and containers?

If your container is not on the table, work from the water. Multiply the ounces by 30 to get grams of water, then divide by 16. For a smaller travel mug, the 20 oz tumbler post has the numbers, and for a big carafe use the 64 oz post. The ratio chart by ounces covers the sizes in between, and how many grams are in a tablespoon of coffee explains the spoon math.
